Jude

The hour-long car ride to Manchester, New Hampshire gave Jude plenty of time to think about the case. How had a simple haunting resulted in an informal death investigation? There was something keeping Lucien Gates from resting in peace. Jude felt like it was his duty to find out what it was.

From his time working with Cope, Jude had a feeling finding Lucien’s body would go a long way to ease the spirit’s mind. If finding peace was on Lucien’s mind. Of course that was another issue that needed to be dealt with. Cope hadn’t been able to reach the spirit and so far as they knew, Madam Aurora had no luck either.

“Where the hell are we? You lost me two turns ago.” Ronan was flipping the pages of his printed directions.

“Out of the two of us, I didn’t think you’d be the technology dinosaur. This is it up here, the office building on the right. He’s only got an hour to meet with us, so make sure your questions are all on point.” Flipping on his blinker, Fitzgibbon pulled into the parking lot of a large office building.

“Where are we meeting this guy?” Cope asked. It hadn’t escaped Jude’s notice that Cope had been particularly fidgety since they’d gotten in the car back in Salem.

“There’s a restaurant on the first floor of the office building. We’re going to meet him there. I just texted him to let him know we were here.” Fitzgibbon pulled his SUV into a vacant parking spot. He turned to look at Jude and Cope. “What both of you need to keep in mind here is that Weston Pierce has agreed to speak to us of his own volition. If you make him feel threatened or backed into a corner, he’ll shut down and we won’t be able to get the information from him he promised to give us. This isn’t a police interrogation. Ronan and I can’t keep him at the table if he wants to leave.” Kevin was staring at Jude.

“I hear you, Kevin. I promise I’ll be a little less Jude today. How’s that?” It wasn’t going to be easy, but Jude would be on his best behavior.

“If you have a fair question, ask it. We’re just saying we all need to be careful of this man’s limits,” Ronan added.

Jude understood perfectly what Ronan was getting at. This guy was under no obligation whatsoever to speak with them, but he was willing to do it. He would tamp down the bulldog side of his personality in order to get to the truth of what was going on with Marcus Gates. “All ashore.” Jude climbed out of the SUV and quickly hurried around to Cope’s side to open the door for him.

“I’m a little worried about this. I know you have experience working with Ronan and Fitzgibbon on Boston Police matters, but I’ve never done anything like this before.” Cope’s hands were shaking.

Jude had never seen this insecure side of Cope before. “You’re going to be fine.
